Presented in partnership with the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, ‘On Another Note: The Intersection of Art and Music’ is an exhibition curated by Alva Greenberg, former owner and director of ALVA Gallery. Through the artists’ explorations of this theme, the exhibition hopes to broaden the viewer’s perception of how music can inspire the making of art.
For some the approach is direct: an artist transposing a specific piece of music into a painting or a composer using pictographic notation to create a score. The two Cuban artists in the exhibition have clear cultural influences in their work while another artist has used a medical procedure as a springboard. The use of actual instruments by some artists is countered by the making of playable sculptures by others. The variety is as extensive as the mediums presented: painting, photography, assemblage, ceramic, sculpture and video. There is even a kite!
Included in the exhibition are works by Mark Applebaum, Elizabeth Azen, Jane Benson, Harry Bertoia, Luke DuBois, Carlos Estevez, Michael Fairfax, Ana Flores, Charles Gaines, Bob Gill, Anita Glesta, Michael Hamad, Ellen Priest, and Davide Salvatore.
The opening reception will be held on June 11 from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the Green Hall Gallery, Yale School of Art, 1156 Chapel Street, New Haven.
