Attachments: Recent Work By Elizabeth Enders

March 18 – April 29

For most of us, the term attachment conjures images of a connection to another person or place or possession. For Elizabeth Enders’ art, these attachments denote Webster’s more obscure definition “affectionate regard for natural beauty.” Alva Gallery announces a new exhibition Attachments: Recent Work By Elizabeth Enders.

Featuring artworks from small, delicately subtle landscape watercolors on paper done in Nova Scotia, such as Dark Indigo I and Islands II, to large abstract oils on canvas and paper such as Glacier and the series Memorandum of Association, Enders’ work displays a remarkable range in style and substance, capturing her thoughtful observation of whatever she chooses as her subject. Her detailed botanical drawings reveal a deep respect and sensitivity to natural beauty. By contrast, Enders uses rhythmic and gestural lettering to convey her interpretation of the emotional and intellectual impact of mark making as art form. While the palette is often muted and soft, the resulting paintings and drawings are forceful and dynamic.

Enders’ work is included in important public and private collections including Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Addison Gallery of American Art, Connecticut College, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Pfizer Inc., and the Dow Jones Art Collection. Elizabeth Enders received her B.A. from Connecticut College and her M.A. from New York University. She lives and works in New York City and Waterford, Connecticut.
